Laboratory Overview and Facilities of the Bachelor’s Program in History Education
The History Learning Laboratory, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat is a learning space that is specifically designed to support the process of learning history that is active, contextual, and source-oriented. Unlike laboratories in the field of exact sciences that are identical to experiments and testing, the history laboratory functions as a means to present a real history learning experience, through direct observation of documents, artefacts, visual media, and simulations of historical events.
The History Learning Laboratory becomes an important means in developing students’ competence in understanding, studying, and reflecting on historical events in a deeper and more meaningful way. In the laboratory, students are not only equipped with factual knowledge about history but are also actively involved in the historical reasoning process through a source-based approach or media and contextual learning experiences.
Through various activities held in the laboratory such as observation of historical dioramas, interpretation of artifacts, utilization of visual media, and simulation of events, students are trained to develop critical, analytical, and chronological thinking skills. These activities not only hone academic abilities, but also encourage the birth of historical awareness in students, namely awareness of the importance of history as a foundation for identity, culture, and national life.
The integration of the immersive learning approach in the history learning laboratory also strengthens the role of the laboratory as a learning environment that is able to touch the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects of students. By presenting a learning experience that is close to the reality of the past, students not only receive historical information, but also experience it actively, either through simulations, documentaries, or interactive visual projects.
The history learning laboratory developed in the History Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, has unique characteristics and is relevant to the needs of history learning in the 21st century. As part of an effort to strengthen experience-based learning, this laboratory does not rely on original historical documents such as archives or ancient manuscripts, but rather optimizes various forms of representative media and educational technology as a means to build students’ historical understanding.
Students of the History Education Study Program as learning objects in this laboratory are directed to not only understand history theoretically, but also experience a contextual, reflective, and participatory learning process. The media used in the laboratory include miniatures of historical buildings and events, visual infographics, chronological maps, documentary films, and the latest technological support such as educational podcast rooms and Virtual Reality (VR)-based learning devices.
